The festival is discussed and explored based on festival theory, flow theory and public domain theory. Through the introduction of flow and public domain into festival theory, a new definition of the festival is proposed. This theory forms the basis for an analysis of a case, the CPH STAGE festival, a new theatre festival held in Copenhagen, which took place for the first time in 2013.
This festival is aiming at letting the Copenhagen theatres present their offer on what makes a good theatre shown. In addition to this it is bringing theatre that is still in its development state, to a broader audience, as regular theatre guests have the opportunity to see, or even participate in the theatre, that is still a long way from reaching a main stream audience.
CPH STAGE has been analysed through participation in 22 events, to identify the festivals identity, qualities and its ability live up to its self‐declared purposes. CPH STAGE provides an ideal platform for an exploration of the festival concept, because it is new and exploratory, and it has not yet found its ground.
Through analysis the festival turns out not to comply, with all aspects of the proposed festival definition. The main reason being, that it is new, and thereby suffers from start‐up problems, and an incoherency in providing the festival mood to all parts of the festival. It does, in other words, not live up to its own ambitions. The discussion of these pre‐ conditions for CPH STAGE does, however, also reveal a great potential for this festival to grow and become a more harmonious offer to its audience than it presently appears to be, judging from its first year. It is recommended to the festival to make use of focussed curating to improve their offer and make a more clear identity towards their audience.
